A survey of voter attitudes and behavior, before and after the 2000 election

2000 NATIONAL ELECTION STUDY -- ICPSR Study Number 3131 -- Number of cases: 1807 -- Number of variables: 1881

The 2000 National Election Study entailed both a pre-election interview and a post-election re-interview. A freshly drawn cross section of the electorate was taken to yield 1807 cases. The 65-minute preelection survey went into the field September 5th, nine weeks before election day. The 65 minute post election study, unique to the time series in that no president elect was named for several days, went into the field the day after the election, November 8th, and remained in the field until December 21st.

Because of the study's most innovative feature--a carefully designed mode experiment--the data represent two presidential studies in 2000, side by side.
The core study preserves our past commitment to probability area sample and face to face (FTF) interviewing: 1000 respondents interviewed prior to the election and 862 were re-interviewed face to face after the election.

Supporting the core study, we used the efficiencies of RDD sampling and telephone interviewing: 803 respondents were interviewed by phone prior to the election and 862 respondents were interviewed by phone after the election. As such, the experiment will define sharply the differences between the two modes and allow us to learn what a shift to telephone interviewing will mean for the NES time-series.
[Janda's Note: In truth the Face to Face interviews had standard and experimental forms, as did the telephone interviews. The first variable in the study, Survey, reports the complex method. You need not worry about the methods used for collecting the data, but this explains why different questions have different response rates.]

The study was conducted by the Survey Research Center of the University of Michigan, and the data were distributed through the auspices of the Interuniversity Consortium for Political and Social Research, to which Northwestern belongs as a Charter Member. NU's Official Representative to the Consortium is Ann Janda, Data Consultant in the Government Publications Department of the University Library. A printed version of the codebook, which contains all questions and coding categories for all 1,881 variables in the full 2000 NES survey, is shelved in her section of Government Publications. Students in Statistics 310 PLEASE NOTE

This file consists of a subset of about 180 variables pertaining to about 1,800 respondents interviewed before and after the 2000 presidential election. To select these variables for our statistics class, I've had to go through nearly 2,000 variables on a preliminary release of the data. Unfortunately, the file did not not contain all the SPSS value labels. I've added many labels, but the documentation is still not complete. Use this data set to identify variables that you might like to study. I will do more work on the data set before you undertake serious analysis.
