plains the criteria that we used to select parties for study in 1950-1962. In essence, we required that parties demonstrate minimum levels of "strength" and "stability" before being selected. For legal parties, this translated into winning at least 5 percent of the seats in two elections. For illegal parties, we required evidence of support from 10 percent of the population over a five-year period. We departed from these criteria to include also governing parties which may not have bothered with legislatures.

Applying these same criteria to the same sample of countries (omitting only the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, which itself ended in 1963), we identified 50 new parties qualifying for study. These parties are named in Table 15.2, which also reports their years of origin.
