Path: janda.org/c10 > Data Sets > parties
The parties file has about 200 variables for 147 parties in 53 countries

It is available in SPSS form as parties.por

Data on these 158 political parties in 53 countries were collected at Northwestern university under the auspices of the International comparative political parties project, with Kenneth Janda as principal investigator. The ICPP project was supported by the National Science Foundation under grants GS-1418, Gs-2533, and GS-27081. The data pertains to parties operating during 1957-1962.

The variables in the study can be regarded as being of two types--basic variables and major concepts. The Distinction between the two is elaborated in janda, A conceptual framework for the comparative analysis of political parties (Sage professional papers in comparative politics, volume 1, No. 2, pp. 75-126). The variables and data are described in Janda's book, Political parties: A cross-national survey (Free Fress, 1980), which is available in the reference room at the University library.

Some of the basic variables have been incorporated into Scales which refer to some of the major concepts of the study. These scales consist of the mean of the standardized scores (or Z-scores) summed across the basic variables within a concept cluster. Each of these concept scores is accompanied by two matching variables disclosing the variance among the indicators within the scale and the number of indicators in the scale.
