European Values Surveys: U.S., U.K., France, Germany

The citizen dataset: A survey of citizens' attitudes and behavior in four European nations
It is available in SPSS form as citizen.sav via DOIT

1990-91 World Values Survey: The Citizen File

In 1990-91, the European Values System Study Group (EVSSG) supervised a set of representative sample surveys in 42 developed and developing nations, representing almost 70% of the world's population. The "citizen" SPSS file consists of a subset of data for four (previously five) nations: the United States, Britain, France, western Germany, and eastern Germany.

This subset was prepared for distribution with Russell J. Dalton, Citizen Politics: Public Opinion and Political Parties, 2nd Edition (Chatham, NJ: Chatham House, 1996). The full data data set for the 1990-91 World Values Survey is distributed by the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research as Study #6160. Northwestern already has this study available through the Government Publications Department of the University library. See Ann Janda in Data Services.

This file has 66 variables and 7,762 UNWEIGHTED cases. To produce a proper representative sample of these nations, run your SPSS commands preceded with WEIGHT BY V02. The weighting will change the number of cases slightly, but the results will be more accurate. See sample frequency runs below.

Appendix B in Citizen Politics contains a brief description of the World Values Survey and an abbreviated codebook that describes 66 variables extracted from the survey for the 7,757 respondents in the U.S., U.K., France, West Germany, and East Germany.

These data are available to students with class accounts on the hardin computer. The data have been prepared for analysis with the SPSS statistical package. The file is citizen.sav.

SPSS refers to variables by names limited to 8 characters in length. To aid your analysis, I have converted the uninformative variable numbers in Appendix B to mnemonics that signal the substance of the variables. Use these mnemonic "names" to refer to the variables

The names of the variables are linked to a computer printout of a crosstabulation of each variable by nation just click on the variable name below.

The last five variables were created from the PARTY variable (v15). In that variable, each code number (e.g., "1") has a different meaning, being linked to different parties in the U.S., U.K., and so on. These five variables translate the code numbers into meaningful labels for different parties in each of the five countries.
