His primary research and teaching interests
are in race, ethnicity, urban politics, immigration, and
African-American politics, all within the field of
American government. His dissertation, “Between Race
and Ethnicity: Afro Caribbean Immigrants, Afro-Americans,
and the Politics of Incorporation,” explores the
impact of racial difference and inequality on the process
of political integration for Caribbean-born blacks in New
York City. He has published essays on Afro-Caribbean
political incorporation, the political salience of racial
and ethnic group identities among native- and
Caribbean-born blacks in the United States, and
coalitional political prospects for African-Americans. He
has been a dissertation research fellow with both the
Social Science Research Council and the Ford
Foundation.
