Professor Hanchard is author of Orpheus and Power: The
Movimento Negro of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, Brazil,
1945-1988 (Princeton University Press, 1994) and
Racial Politics in Contemporary Brazil (Duke
University Press, 1988). His current project
"Afro-Modernity: Race, Transnationalism and the
African Diaspora" is a comparative analysis of the
transnational political movements involving black
political actors in the United States, Ghana, and Jamaica
from the late 19th century to the late 20th
century.
