S T A T E S -- Fifty States in the US plus Washington, D.C.

The states file has about 100 socioeconomic and political variables for 50 states plus Washington D.C.
(Washington D.C. is included because it casts three electoral votes in presidential elections.)

This file is available as an SPSS "portable" file, states.por, that can be imported into SPSS.

If you are viewing this page with INTERNET EXPLORER, you can click HERE to download the .por file.

If you are viewing this with the NETSCAPE browser, the file will not download properly.

These data come from the U.S. Census Publication, 'STATE AND METROPOLITAN DATA BOOK: 1991,' which is available in the Government Publications Room of the University Library. The variable numbers in this data set correspond to the variables as numbered in the column headings in the Census publication. Consult that book for information about the NUMBERED variables. Those variables were extracted from a larger set available in raw form as 'ICPSR Study 6398'. A description of that study is available in the Government Publications Room. See Ann Janda, Data Consultant, in Government Publications. (Only data for the 50 states plus Washington, D.C., are in this file.)

This file also contains some variables not in the Census Publication and that are not clear from the accompanying labels. These variables are

PARTYID and IDEOLOGY

Both of these are mean values computed from sample surveys taken in individual states and aggregated over time. They show the mean party identification on a three-point scale and the mean ideological self-classification of the electorate. See Gerald C. Wright et al., "Measuring State Partisanship and Ideology with Survey Data," Journal of Politics, 47 (May, 1985), 469-489.

DEMREG and REPREG

are the TOTAL registration figures for the two parties by states in 1992. (Not all states collect these data.) This information comes from the National Journal (8/15/92), p.1896. (Jason Gluck kindly entered these data into the computer.)

PCTPOOR and FAMILY$

are Census data reported by the New York Times for 1991 (9/4/92). The Official poverty level in 1991 for a family of four was $13,924. - (Jason Gluck also entered these data.)
