Lecture 5:

Managing Data in SPSS 10 Data Editor

The Data Editor in SPSS offers many opportunities for managing data. For example, you can enter new variables into a data file that you saved previously. Let's do that using the data file for your randomly selected set of ten states.

Here are the variables that you have in your file:

1
2
3
4
5
6
7

State Name
Black Population
% black
Percent vote for Clinton in 1992
Percent vote to Clinton in 1996
1980 Electoral vote
1990 Electoral vote

You lack data for the states' electoral vote after redistricting and for the presidential vote in 2000. You can enter these data using the Data Editor, using this list of data:

Here are the steps to add the data:

1. First, make a list of the ten lines that you want to add.
2. Go to the "Data View" and click on the shaded "var" after "votes90." The column will darken.
3. In that column, enter the new electoral data derived from the 2000 census.
4. Then go to the "Variable View." Name the variable and give it a label.

We'll use another feature of the Data Editor to insert the vote for Bush in 2000 after the Clinton 1996 vote:

5. Click at the top of the "votes80" column. This will "select" it.
6. Then click on the Data menu and choose Insert Variable.

7. A new untitled column will appear in which you can enter the "bushpct" data.
8. After you've entered the data, name the variable and enter a label for the variable (your own choice).

Then save your file with the new variables and log out.
