In mid-January 2000, the Provost's Office at Northwestern
University announced funds "to increase the involvement of
undergraduates in the scholarly/creative work of faculty."
In March, Provost Lawrence Dumas agreed to support a "Summer
Camp for Political Party Research." It would employ from
five to ten undergraduates for eight weeks to develop a
website for cross-national analysis of political
parties.
Students interested in applying for the Summer Camp had
to enroll in a Pass/Fail Tutorial on Political Party
Research during the Spring Quarter. It was intended to
instruct students in the method and substance of the study
and to help them decide whether they wished to commit for 30
hours of work over eight weeks during the summer.
Of the seventeen students who enrolled in the tutorial,
nine elected to participate in the Summer Camp. Three
graduate students also committed to roles in the project.
